Hey Useful Idiots,
Over the past two years, conversations with other independent journalists like David Sirota, Jordan Chariton, Abby Martin and more have shown a rising importance for a more organized independent media. Instead of the overlapping of topics, competition for subscribers, and scattered information flow, a united front would not only make it easier for subscribers to get real news, but also create a worthy opponent for corporate media.
This idea seems, for now at least, too logistically difficult in a media landscape controlled by corporations. Angry commenters and greedy mainstream journalists often ask why viewers should have to pay for news, but, as Taibbi often points out, we’d much rather have the reader be our boss than the chemical weapons lobby.
So while this unity of legit journalism may not be happening yet, the first step to getting it rolling is to talk about it.
Which means today, (like Thursday for the NFL), is Draft Day. Who would you want on the team of independent journalists? You have all the experts, journalists, pundits, and writers from both the left and right to choose from, a wide range of voices, allowing specialists like Aaron to focus on their main pursuits, knowing others will cover the rest of what’s going on.
It’s a great concept, but difficult to get into action. Today, we’re taking the first step.
