I do not agree with the proposition that Israel is an "apartheid state" but it is certainly debatable. It is nothing new that The Hill sucks it has for a looooong time.
An official policy of racial segregation formerly practiced in the Republic of South Africa, involving political, legal, and economic discrimination against nonwhites.
A policy or practice of separating or segregating groups.
The condition of being separated from others; segregation.
-----------------------------
There are different laws in Israel for Palestinians and Jews, allowing fewer rights for Palestinians based on their ethnicity. That is apartheid per definition.
You left out the racial part of the definition. Why did you do that? Israelis and Palestinians are not a different race. AND even if they were, the policies and laws in place would NOT be because of RACIAL differences.
I did not leave any part of the definition out. You can read above that Apartheid is not defined exclusively having to do with race. Your comment misses every mark.
Does the Israeli government treat Palestinians with the same human rights of those who live outside of Palestinian territories? Of course not. You can quibble about the semantics of the South African word, “apartheid”, but that changes nothing in regard to the treatment of Arab Muslims of the region. Any suggestion otherwise is disingenuous.
Israeli Arabs have all the same rights as Israeli Jews, Christians, Druze, etc. The Palestinians who live in the territories and Gaza do not. They are not Israeli citizens. Do Mexicans have the same rights in Texas as US citizens? Do Canadians have the same rights as US citizens in Maine? I think not. So how is this apartheid?
Israel controls the occupied territories and Gaza completely, making Israel, under international law, responsible for the well being and fair treatment of those people living there. Denying Palestinians citizenship while also denying them the freedom of movement and self determination is apartheid.
“But in practice, Israeli Arabs are subject to a range of discriminatory practices, as attested to not only by local and international human rights groups, but also Israeli government sources.”
Every poll of Israeli Arabs shows that they are very happy to be Israeli citizens. All societies are in some way unequal. There are also problems in the Arab community that hold them back like the fact that most women don't work. That is a product of their community not discrimination. The religious Jewish community also has issues. Whatever it is far from apartheid (my South African friends are repulsed by this latest progressive left strategy).
No, every poll of Arab Israelis does not show they are happy to be Israeli citizens. Your claim is erroneous, and it skirts the issues of Palestinians living in the so called Palestinian territories, in an apartheid state relationship.
Regardless, the Arabs who are not Israeli citizens do not have the same rights as those who are. Pretty simple concept. Can't understand why it's so difficult for you to grasp.
This is classic whataboutism. Iran and other states in the region don’t have the same power and control of the Palestinian territories as does the government of Israel. Iranians are not Arabs, just saying.
The problem with the idea that “Arabs hate Israel”, is which Arabs do you mean? The Saudis collaborate with Israel continually, along with the Gulf States, Egypt, and Jordan. Lumping all Arabs in one basket is at best unhelpful.
Which Arabs do I mean? "The" Arabs. Did I stutter?
Collaboration doesn't mean someone likes you. You know how evangelical Christians support Israel, right? You also know why, right?
Sarcasm aside, of course lumping everyone into one basket isn't fair, but I was speaking metaphorically and discussing the known status quo. Israel has some collaborations with Arab states. Sometimes some allies. They don't have friends. I'm not choosing sides. I have no dog in this hunt and don't know enough of the details to have a hard opinion.
That’s absolutely wrong. They should let her speak. Katie like most “Progressive “ sheep these days are BDS from the River to the Sea Anti-Zionists. Antisemitic some say. Let the debate continue...
opposing Israeli government policies, especially by a Jewish woman, is not anti-semitic, but an attempt to weaponize anti-semiticism by conflating the 2 very different things. But silencing critics is what the Israeli government and its allies do as a strategy.
Gaza has a Southern border with Egypt. Thanks to Hamas’ terror practices, Egypt doesn’t want them in its country any more than Israel does. That’s why they don’t let them in either. Where are the finger pointers at Egypt? There are none. This is called anti-Semitism.
Can someone explain to a non-Jewish Christian how Israel is an apartheid state in the real sense of the word? Here’s what I know so far.
Does israel have glaring faults and failures, yes! Should it be an occupier, no! But even before the occupation Palestine was attacking Israel, leading to war. (Do some reading on history if you don’t know that situation.) The war is not because of occupation or because Israel is “apartheid”. Prevarication with this argument helps no one, least of all suffering Palestinian women and children.
Let’s look at some facts other than from a pro-Palestinian point of view:
1. Israel is the only Democracy in the Middle East. If you say you value democracy that should be important one would think
2. 5% of its population is Arab living in far better conditions and freedom than they ever would in most of the rest of the ME
3. Gay people live freely without the fear of being killed for being gay as they would in Palestinian. Gay pride marches are held in Israel. What’s the situation for LGBTQ in Palestine - or anywhere else in the ME - anyone know?
4. Women and girls have more freedoms than anywhere else in the authoritarian ME. They enjoy the life they choose
5. Innovation in medicine and technology amongst other things is thriving and benefiting the world through shared knowledge. There is a movement to destroy this by Palestine. It’s called Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS). It’s stated goal is for equity with Israel, but how does destroying one economy, which is what BDS could do to Israel if successful, benefit another?
6. A couple of times in the last few decades Israel has ceded its occupied territories, I believe all of them. Palestine has refused to broker peace
7. How do you negotiate peace with a leadership who effectively believe you should not even exist and want you wiped off the planet?
This is not a simple situation, both sides bear responsibilities for atrocities and failures. Both sides act badly at times
Ms Halper, while she should not have been fired, should do a lot better at due diligence. Instead of parroting what she’s read, even if it is a missive from a so called pro Israel NGO or other similar materials. Spouting off on one side of the argument is not good journalism.
It’s amazing that we live in a pluralistic democracy that everyone is fine with until others don’t say exactly what they command you to say. I might not agree with every view you have, Katie, but I respect your view and want to hear it. I commented on another newsfeed and got sworn at in three ranting texts because I proposed another viewpoint. Ethical conduct needs to be taught to some for sure. The hill is supposedly by the media bias site, neutral. Guess your story and a few others that left because their narratives proved them biased and undemocratic.

So what about the second part of my comment? You're just going to conveniently ignore that?
Propaganda that cuts both ways. Censorship is wrong, period

the simplest concept for you to understand, is that Arab citizens of Israel don’t have the same rights as non Arab citizens.
How do the Arab states treat Palestine? Iran? It’s a proxy war state hellbent on eliminating Israel. Sad.
This is classic whataboutism. Iran and other states in the region don’t have the same power and control of the Palestinian territories as does the government of Israel. Iranians are not Arabs, just saying.
Agree that the Arabs hate Israel. It does not change the fact that Israel is an apartheid state. They aren't mutually exclusive.

The immediate SHUT down of this conversation by the Hill speaks volumes.
We all have seen the brutal images of hyped up military/police actions in GAZA for years and year; whatever you want to call it.
Yes....discussion/debate and compassionate, responsible actions to stop this is way long overdue.
Some progressive language around Israel makes me wince but it shouldn’t be censored. Sorry to hear this, Katie.

To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.
Katie, so sorry you lost this gig, but forever grateful you stuck to your principles and will be noted as on the right side of history...
Not all Arabs hate Israelis. It’s a fact. Get over it.
Let's send all the Illegal Mexicans to Israel.
