Wonderful interview with Cornel West. He should wear Harvard's scorn as a badge of honor. And, BTW, you guys picked Coltrane and Prince, but I got Beethoven. What was the bet?
Regarding the light-hearted conversation about the Oscars, you guys should invite Jessica Bruder onto Useful Idiots to talk about her book Nomadland since the film based on it just won Best Picture. I've heard several interviews with her including one by Chris Hedges and she has a lot of interesting things to say about the after-effects of the Great Recession especially for older workers. Also Barbara Ehrenreich would be a terrific guest.
M&K, I really love yr podcast and have been dedicatedly watching from the very beginning. Though I’m delighted that the departure from RS didn’t sink the pod, I have to say, I hope yr continuing to work out the kinks on how this substack version is presented. Is there a way the subscriber full interview/full show can be posted the same day as the free one? Given that the full versions don’t come out until days after the free, I’m stuck watching the free one because I just can’t wait to hang with y’all but the way parts are snipped out makes the episodes feel like a mostly redacted Pentagon leak. Thanks for the great work and all the laughs.
p.s. - any chance Max Blumenthal’s coming back on? Would love to hear y’all’s rap on the looming China boogeyman. Or Michael Parenti?
I really don't understand the versions, long v short, for paid v nonpaid. Are there always ultimately two interviews, with the longer being for subscribers?
I don't know. It seems that there may be two of the apparently same show, but one is longer. So, is the longer one the subscriber-only version? I assume so, but am not really sure if that's how this works.
Matt says the media is building up a toxic "Yang gang" narrative similar to what was done with "Bernie Bros". Except, Yang's comments to the New York LBGT group were actually pretty awkward, and he comes in for some deserved criticism for that. I guess Yang was trying to be funny like he often does, which I usually appreciate about him. He came across as poorly informed (as far as any actual LGBT issues go) and treating them like a political bloc to be wielded just to win elections for Democrats. He wants to visit a famous NY gay bar to get in touch with the community? OK, cool story Andrew.
I would also say that Matt is hypersensitive to this issue because of the Bernie Bros line of attack. I mean, you guys interviewed Bernie very early on in the UI podcast, and it was total fluff - not a single substantive or critical question asked. Decrying attacks on Bernie/Yang, whether they are fair or not, falls a bit flat when you yourselves are guilty of acting as a public relations arm of theirs.
Yang being criticized for his supporters’ online activity and his LGBT engagement are two separate matters. The media does appear to be “building a toxic ‘Yang Gang’ narrative similar to the ‘Bernie Bros’ narrative.” Also, my recollection of Bernie on UI was that he called in for a brief segment, and it was friendly — no surprise, as Katie was an open Sanders supporter and this is a podcast, not a newspaper.
Yes, they are separate matters, but Matt was objecting to both as they were lumped to together in the article he was referencing.
A podcast hosted by two well-known writers/journalists cannot be separated from "media". It the podcast chooses to carry water for specific politicians in the form of favorable interviews, it absolutely does take the sting out of claims that said politicians are being treated unfairly by other media outlets.
You are the one who tied the two subjects together in a way to mislead. YOU connected the Yang Gang getting the Bernie Bros treatment directly with the other matter as though one undid the other. "Except, Yang's comments to the New York LGBT group were . . . ." That is what you wrote. You were specifically conflating. As for the rest: first off, when has Katie ever held herself out to be a "journalist?" She is always giving opinions, and she wears her Bernie-camp leftism on her sleeve. Together at UI, they are doing a podcast, and they do not pretend in the podcast to be approaching it with "political objectivity." If you don't like it, don't listen. If you just want Taibbi as a journalist, just read his journalism. But the UI podcast stream commentary is not remotely the same as someone doing a work of journalism that is propagandistic. Sorry. You have simply made some bad points here. It happens.
insightful stuff here - feel free to check me out i like what you have to say on The Hill and via poddy! would love a shoutout from team useful idiots as someone just beginning their substack journey :) https://tumbleweedwords.substack.com/
Hillary = Pantsuit. Pelosi = Pencesuit.
So... there is an extended interview with Dr West *somewhere* here...?

Hey Katie can you have LaoWhy86 on your show?
Neither here nor there but may I suggest uBlock Origin for your broadcast browser?

Andy Kaufman's wardrobe consists of a general's costume, some blouses and blazers and one sharp Pence-suit
Your interview with Dr. West is a beauty! Love that man!
Cornel West is on the MPP ADVISORY COUNCIL
https://peoplesparty.org/our-coalition/advisory-council/ and supporting a 3rd party movement works against Bernie's strategy of reforming the DP from the inside.
No doubt, Trump was getting kickbacks from the Secret Service, so they jacked up the costs to cover the grift.
grift is a cool word - https://tumbleweedwords.substack.com/
A cool word for a dicey operator.
