I play music to bypass the nonsense. I also write about the nonsense in an academic capacity. I find writing about existentially dreadful things to actually get my mind off of my own existential dread about becoming nothingness or whatever it is one becomes. And Wife and cats. Very helpful nonsense distractors.
Writing is a great distractor. Even writing this article about escaping the nonsense helped me escape the nonsense. How do you write about existential dread?
I'm a humanities/English Instructor at community college. I turned my dissertation into a book (the publisher titled it) Truth to Post-Truth in American Detective Fiction. Basically I was exploring how we went from a world where people more or less agreed on a background in which to discuss reality to the present where...well it's pretty wild out there. I actually used Matt's book Hate Inc in a chapter and the book Revolt of the Public by Martin Gurri. I've been reading Taibbi's stuff for a long time, but I never would have found Revolt of the Public without this channel. (More than happy to get you a copy. It's sold in the tens of copies, so supplies will last)
I recreated the recent Dinnergate event at the Real White House, Mar-a-Lago, with miniature furniture and Barbie Dolls.
All the sociopolitical drama evaporates when one is focused on creating the perfect "wines" (by mixing soft drinks and fruit drinks with 10% real fruit juice) to complement a seven-course anti-kosher meal.
Tensions over who's going to be whose veep to whose numero uno evaporated into shared belly laughs when the maid dropped Melania's boeuf en croute on the floor in a scene right out of an old Lucy Show. (Requisite head of flaming hair present!)
"Be best!" Mr Fuentes cracked, to uproarious peals of delight. Even Melania busted up, in spite of herself!
They quickly ordered a fast food buffet and a delicious time was had by all.
But now I have to clean up the mess and the Adderall I stole from my nephew's backpack is wearing off.
Getting through tomorrow will need a whole 'nother coping device.
I try to hang out with my wife and dog. But then we are browsing YouTube and I play her a one minute clip from Useful Idiots with Norm Finkelstein calling out Democrats and identity politics. This leads to ongoing debate/argument where she says “both sides suck, but we need two parties what other options are there?” I’m struggling to get her to buy into a non Capitalist ideal, because she firmly believes people suck and will only be out for themselves and we are never getting rid of this system, and we do our best with what we have. How do you change someone’s mind that this system is the only one and anything else is not going to happen?
Music and dance in my rural mountain home, plus intelligent newsletters and podcasts with commentary on the nonsense, such as I find here at Useful Idiots. Everyone please be careful not to succumb to the emotional manipulation of ideological cults! Predators are afoot everywhere.
Membership fees help, but aren’t a definitive proof, I suppose. Are there shrines to the hosts and/or producers that I’m unaware of? Perhaps retreat centers and some sacraments distributed that you’re not telling me about? 😠 St. Katie! Save me with your sword of sharp wit and punning prowess! I shall forever be your pious devotee. 🙏☮️❤️🐾
anything done for its own sake is a waste of time / energy imo (leaving aside that i don't think anything is ever truly done for its own sake). it's important to be informed, but only insofar as it is for a greater purpose like organizing or agitating others to action etc. lest we get stuck in the paralysis of analysis and interpret the world without ever changing it
Recently it feels like watching news of war torn villages and dying people only has the purpose of giving credibility to extensive wars and powerful people. and all we get back is depression from watching it
yeah i get you, i personally have lost many loved ones in my life and as a result have become super sensitive to death etc. so i try to stay away from the details of these types of events to the extent that i can
Wilson, you are a tall drink of water! Being an "honored citizen" in the public transportation realm, I can get away with saying that.
I literally get my hands dirty by gardening to release the stress of todays atmosphere. Nothing quite like getting into the soil to rid the "muck" from my mind.
I do have questions about the fines that long distance truck drivers, specifically in the West coast states have to endure to satisfy the needs of we every day folk. Why are some states more stringent? Where does that money go? Who sets the costs of the fine? Are certain trucks targeted?
Just curious to know if there is as much greed, deception, dishonesty, etc. going on in this "industry" as there is in the financial and other worlds.
I read fiction (the best form of escapism), and last year I rediscovered the pleasure of swimming (it makes all the tenision in my body and mind go away). I think that informing oneself is important, but we have to learn how to not get too emotional about all this stuff, for our emotions are what polititians and the mainstream media love to play with.
I almost want to see Hershel Walker win, just for the popcorn moments after he does something outrageous - like get another woman pregnant while a sitting Senator and then try to deny it - and the Republicans tie themselves in knots trying to distance themselves while holding on to the seat.
I say, "almost" because that would suck for the people of Georgia and the US.
Comedy. It's good to laugh. Katie and Aaron are always a blast, even if the subject matter is dark or otherwise intrinsically unfunny. Well, "Dr Strangelove" is my idea of a great comedy. I thought Dave Chappelle's recent SNL monologue was pretty edgy awesome. I would recommend Brent Pella's recent short skit "Pandemic Amnesty" for a fresh look and laugh at the Covid Regime Mentality on both sides of that divide...
I try to focus on my goals, I am aiming to be financially independent for the first time in my life and am studying for my career. When I’m not doing schoolwork I am glued to a screen or at my part time job. Trying to read a book from my favorite author Ayn Rand, but it loses a lot to my phone.
Just watched a Mearsheimer interview on Unherd where he talked about the non trivial possibility of global thermonuclear war. But other than that not much going on.
Aaron and Bari, would you interview Jeffrey Sachs regarding the history of the Nato and Russia agreements and doings after the collapse of the USSR. This would be enlightening to readers who do not know all this saga.
Economic journalist Max Keiser covers trends taking over our financial market, Bitcoin being the latest. He joins Tucker to discuss the FTX fiasco and says this is the latest in a long line of fraud schemes, but now featuring non-Bitcoin cryptocurrencies

Music is my choice as well!

How do we know Useful Idiots isn’t a cult…?

Dance is huge release! I used to feel silly doing it, because I'm bad at it, but the enjoyment exceeds the embarrassment.

wrt to escaping the nonsense, i don't think i've really mastered that yet lmao i sure would love to tho
How about 2023 predictions?
big brain question
I’m thinking: 23 Skidoo

I take Portugese language and aquarel painting courses and normally do not watch any news. But somehow cannot isolate myself from my phone...

I think we deserve it.

We’re honored to be in your comedy lineup that includes strangelove and chapelle. Will check out that sketch

It's definitely hard to read with constant screens everywhere. I find that I have to force myself to read for a while before it becomes a habit again
My will wanes often 🤭

Sam Bankman-Fried committed multiple illegal and major crimes – see a good description below:
https://youtu.be/dsPNjskCHr8 -- Michael Saylor Destroys Sam Bankman-Fried of FTX & Alamida Res.
-- What are examples prior sentences for similar, although much smaller scale, crimes ?
-- Why was he invited as a celebrated guest speaker at November DealBook Summit (interviewed by NYT journalist Andrew Sorkin) ?
-- When he will be investigated for his huge and brazen frauds and – by whom (how many victim types and overseeing bodies?
Does anybody know even partial answers? Many thanks !!
We live in a kleptocracy..
